A couple of years ago, I attending a local networking event with a small group of professionals from various industries. We were at the very start of the event, where everyone takes turns to introduce themselves and give their elevator pitch, when one gentleman (let's call him "Bob") introduced himself as a web designer and proudly said the following:
I was at a swanky dinner and dance event not too long ago and I bumped into a very old and dear friend. It had been ages since we saw last saw each other. So, after the customary hugs, sharing photos of our respective children, and commenting on how much they've grown, we pledged to keep in touch. She asked me for my number so I told her that my number hadn't changed. It's actually the same one I've had since 1994! She then explained that she had recently changed phones and hadn't yet transferred all of her contacts. I then made a face similar to the one below.
So this morning I was driving down the M25. It was pouring down with rain, I was tired, bored, with only Google map’s occasional voice directions for company. My son was with me but he was fast asleep and snoring his head off.
After a few minutes of driving, I spotted in front of me the car in the picture above. This isn’t the actual picture (I’m sure you wouldn’t approve of me taken a photo while driving on the motorway) but it is the actual car.
I’ve been to a lot of networking events. A lot! I still do from time to time. I’ve met and connected with some very interesting people at such events, and I’ve given out a lot of business cards. A lot! But after years of attending such events, one thing has never, ever happened to me...
